Premier Bone and Joint Surgery Center

Materials Testing to Facilitate Construction of New Surgery Center

Coffey partnered with Vertix Builders in their construction of Premier Bone & Joint Center’s (PB&J) new surgical and rehabilitation facility.

Coffey performed all the materials testing for this project, which involved services such as soil compaction, concrete testing, steel reinforcement inspection and critical bolted and welded connections.

Materials testing is a crucial part of the construction process as it ensures the quality of all the materials being used and tests the materials’ resistance against natural disasters

When building heavy-load structures upon the ground, it is necessary to test the stability of the soil. Coffey engineers tested compaction to ensure that PB&J’s foundation and parking lot were conducive for heavy load structures and vehicles. In addition, tests were completed to assess the concrete for air content, workability and compressive strength.

Coffey also performed steel reinforcement testing to check the rebars present in the concrete structures. Rebars provide concrete with the strength and tension necessary to uphold a building and prevent concrete from cracking.

Once the PB&J building was erected, Coffey inspected all the high strength bolt connections and the majority of the weld connections. These connections are inspected for structural integrity ensuring the steel erector has proper technique and method of installation as determined by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC).

At the end of the project, Coffey delivered reports verifying that the critical structural components of the surgery center were built correctly and securely.

Now PB&J is able to serve their clients in a larger capacity providing bone and joint surgery and rehabilitation on a whole new level.

About Materials Testing

Materials testing is a regulatory requirement for most massive projects amongst the country and is considered to be a worthwhile investment. Complications from not building with the right material could cause financial setbacks, project complications, and in some cases, more serious consequences like infrastructure malfunction or collapse.
